For those of you who don’t know, Route 16 is located at the end of Babbacombe Downs Road, next to Walls Hill. It was known as the Coach House for many years and was popular among local families for its food as well as its beer garden and play area for kids.
It has since been changed to Route 16, and has now been taken over by a new management team who have big plans for 2019.
Torquay Online took some time to meet the new managers and find out more about them and what to expect from Route 16 in the near future.
Graham and Sandy
Graham and Sandy moved to Torquay from London around 4 years ago. Although he had been in the trade for a while, Graham came to manage the place through a chance meeting of the owner.
They’ve only been there a few weeks but theyre enjoying it so far, and hope to turn it into one of the best places in Torquay for a meal and a couple of drinks.
We spoke to Graham and Sandy for around 20 minutes about some of their plans for the place, and it all sounds very exciting.
Food & Drink
As its early days, they are currently trying out a new menu. It’s a work in progress, but there are already a lot of tasty looking things on there. There are options available for meat eaters and vegetarians, and they serve actual chip chop chips instead of the regular ones you see in most places.
As well as dinner, they are also pushing out an extensive lunch menu which includes a 2 for £15 option as well as a senior citizens meal (cod, chips, mushy peas + a pot of tea) for only £6.95.
They also have a carvery every Sunday for the family at a reasonable price (£7.95 for regular size, £9.95 for large and £5.95 for kids under 12).
If you like to eat and fancy a challenge, they have the option to try and conquer their kilo burger, which is a kilogram of meat along with plenty of trimmings. The challenge is £50 to those who can’t beat it, but free to those who can.
We decided to give a couple of things on the menu a try. Me, being a burger enthusiast, tried out the 12oz double cheeseburger served with a portion of chip shop chips and onion rings. The burger was one of the best I’ve tasted in Torbay, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who likes that kind of thing. The chips were freshly made in the same style as Drakes in Babbacombe, and anyone who’s tasted them will be able to tell you how good they are.
My friend who joined me ordered, gammon, egg, pineapple as well as the chips again. She also really enjoyed her meal, especially the gammon. It’s definitely somewhere we’d recommend to other people.
They have a new chef who has done a great job so far.
The bar has a good selection of beer (bottled and draught), wine and spirits at decent prices. If you go in there between 5-7 on between Monday and Friday, it’s happy hour, where draught beer is £2.50 an house spirits are £3.20 and you can double up for £1 … It’s definitely worth popping in after work at those prices!
Events
As well as being a great place to eat and drink, they also have a number of events for people to watch. Every Thursday is Jam Night, where anyone can take the mic and try out their singing skills. They have regular karaoke and live bands, including these upcoming nights…
Riviera FM are playing tonight as well as live performances from live performances from Georgia O’Mara and Chris Ostler
Voodoo are playing on 7th December
Don’t Fret are playing on Boxing Day
Check out their Facebook page to see what other events are coming up.
Children’s Christmas Cracker Charity Event – 1st December
Graham and Sandy are planning on organising a number of charity events at Route 16, and this upcoming one deserves a special mention.
Tomorrow (1st December), they are hosting an event to raise money for the charity Children with Cancer UK. There will be lots of fun & games, including face painting, party dances, a raffle, visits from Santa and a Free buffet available all day! Looks like it’s going to be an awesome day for a really good cause, so make sure you get down there to enjoy the fun!
The event is on from 2pm until 7pm.
Parties
If you’ve ever been inside Route 16 (or the Coach House as it was previously called), you’ll know that it’s quite a big place with a lot of open space. For that reason it’s a really good place to book a party or function.
If you can organise a party for at least 40 people, you can have the venue for free as well as a free buffet (a deposit is required). If you’re planning a big party, it’s definitely worth getting in touch with them!
Although it’s still early for Graham and Sandy at Route 16, things are looking really promising. I’m looking forward to seeing their plans taking shape in 2019!
