Alternative Space Rock music which Muse play is characterised by loose and lengthy song structures centered on instrumental textures that typically produce a Hypnotic Otherworldy Sound.

Matt Bellamy sings with his falsetto voice which reaches unusually higher notes than the normal range giving their music a distinctive appealing sound.

After leaving Teignmouth Community College the band realised that they had something very special. They quit their jobs and left Teignmouth as they found it difficult to establish themselves there, and headed to London to follow their dream of being a successful rock band.

They soon started doing gigs in London and Manchester and were developing quite the fanbase. Meanwhile, a family friend Dennis Smith who knew their parents and had seen the boys growing up had opened Sawmills Studios in Golant Cornwall and contacted them to head down.

At Sawmills they soon started their first recordings and released their first self-titled EP in 1998. This was completed by working with music producer Safta Jaffery who used Dennis Smith’s Studios.

Jaffery is big in the music business and has been awarded over 150 Platinum, Gold, and Silver awards for his work with bands like The Stone Roses, The Cure, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay and Radiohead. He signed up Muse and became their Manager and they produced their first studio album, Showbiz. in 1999.

They toured Europe, America and Australia and quickly established themselves as one of the best live bands in the world. After 24 years together, they are still touring and playing in front of hundreds of thousands of fans a year. They have recorded 7 studio albums, with over 20 million sales. They have also released 38 singles and 52 music videos.

They are loved in Teignmouth, and haven’t forgotten their roots. In 2009 they played a concert in Teignmouth that was completely free to locals.

They still have strong ties to the town too. Bass player Chris’ mum Jackie Wolstenholme still runs the Devon Arms – so if you ever feel like popping in to the bar and hotel, you might end up running into a megastar.

Congratulations Muse on such a fantastic career and putting South Devon on the map!
