It’s the last Torquay Online business woman of the month award, and I couldn’t think of a better person. Not only is this person great at what she does, but she also does a lot to help other local businesses in the area, including this one. She has really helped us get ourselves out there in our first year so thank you for that!

Our business woman of the month for December is Rachel Hewitt, owner of Hummingbird Photos. They are a professional portrait and wedding photography service. They are able to capture quality, creativeness and family members in the comfort of your own home of favourite places.

She has been running Hummingbird Photos for just over a year and during that time she has turned it into a thriving business. I interviewed Rachel to find out more about her and Hummingbird Photos.

How did Hummingbird Photos start?

I found out I was a good photographer when I took it up as a spare subject in A-Level. I decided to carry it on into university where I qualified with a BA Hons degree. I then worked for a well known photography company for a while but decided to go solo and started Hummingbird.

What’s the most rewarding part of running your own business?

I love being able to provide everyone with equal opportunities to capture family photos. I work alot with children who have special educational needs and just love to meet new people.

What has been the most difficult part of it?

Setting up on my own. I do everything myself from marketing to editing. So sometimes there aren’t enough hours in the day.

Any plans to expand in the future?

I am considering employing someone and possibly having a studio in a couple of years.

Any advice to young people in the area looking to start a business?

I would really suggest going to The Prince’s Trust, they have helped me massively and provided a mentor for 2 years to advise me with whatever I need. Also to really research into the area and to think about what they can do to stand out.

Thank you very much Rachel, and congratulations. We have awarded Rachel with our first official Torquay Online certificate! We with Hummingbird all the success that it definitely deserves in the future.
