It’s that time again where we celebrate someone who is excelling at their profession in the Torbay area. So far we’ve featured 4 people from a range of industries in the area, and this month is no different.

Torquay Online’s August business person of the month is Steven Collyer.

Steven is the owner of the Shiphay Chippy, which has been growing in popularity over the last few months since Steven took over. So much so that they have a perfect rating from 166 Facebook reviews. That’s amazing!

Last Friday I decided to find out what all the fuss was about – and I wasn’t disappointed. I expected just a run of the mill fish and chip shop, but it was far more than that. I was so impressed that I decided to name Steven this month’s business person of the month.

I recently got in touch with Steven and asked him a few questions about himself and his business.

Steven has been running the Shiphay Chippy since January this year, and before that it looks like he’s lead an interesting life.

He’s owned a number of bars and night clubs in South Wales. These include Koolers Nightclub, Wow Bar and Club Cardiff. His family have run food pubs and a big hotel, so he has a wide knowledge in the catering industry.

I asked him to talk about the Shiphay Chippy in his own words. Here’s what he said…

“We sell the best quality food as possible, using locals suppliers . When we took over the Chippy, of course fish is my passion but we wanted to sell food with chips . Hot roast meats , real gravy which I think is the best about , we change daily specials everyday , our kebab meat on chips with salad and sauces is a huge seller.

Our chicken curry’s sell loads

We cater for Vegans and Gluten free.

Our crispy chicken and chicken balls are yummy (this is something I can personally vouch for).

Giant Yorkshire puddings with chips and real gravy is ogasmic.

We are open everyday from 12 pm till 9 pm except Sundays.”

It’s always nice to see someone have a lot of passion about what they do, and you can tell by the way Steven talks about his business that he clearly has.

To anyone who’s looking to go into the catering/take-away business, Steven says that the hardest part of running the business are the hours. He’s on his feet between 8am and 9pm for 6 days a week. But he says this is worth it when he sees returning customers that keep him smiling!

To sum it up – if you are looking to start a take-away, be prepared to work long hours and always keep a smile on your face.

When I asked Steven what the future holds for the Shiphay Chippy, he said that the menu will change with the seasons and local produce.

Congratulations Steven, and keep doing what you’re doing!
