Earlier on we celebrated our first ever business woman of the week on Torquay Online, Becky West.

Now it’s time to celebrate our first ever Torquay Online business man of the week.

This week’s winner is Nick Grant.

Nick’s a driving instructor and has been for 15 years. He runs Grant’s School of Motoring, which is one of the area’s most respected and highly rated driving schools.

I recently asked Nick a few questions about his business. Here’s what he had to say.

What made you decide to become a driving instructor?

One day I had an epiphany and decided I wanted to be a driving instructor and so went for it.

What’s the most rewarding part of running the business?

Getting somebody to reach their eureka moment; when they grasp a skill or aspect of driving. Especially with my special educational needs client.

But the ultimate kick is when they pass their driving test.

What was the most difficult part of it?

2008 when the economy went belly up. Wondering when the phone would ring.

Any expansion plans on the horizon?

Yes. My brother who I am training has joined me so we have spare capacity for the moment but filling up gradually.

Any advice to those looking to set up a business in the area?

Go for it. Why work for somebody else when you can be your own boss. Once you have made that leap of faith you won’t look back.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Torbay?

My favourite thing about the Bay and the area (outside my family) has got to be … the wonderful people I get to meet through my work.
