We’re now almost into the final two months of the year. This obviously means it’s getting cold and dark, but it also means that we still have 3 more business men of the month awards to go before 2020.
This month’s business man of the month is Barry Johnstone. Barry runs Johnstone Plastering (Facebook) and has been since 2006.
I recently asked Barry a few questions about running his business, here’s what he had to say…
What made you decide to start your business?
I was working for a housing dev firm when l decided l wanted to concentrate on plastering and rendering so resigned and took the plunge to go self employed.
What is the most rewarding part of running your own business?
The most rewarding part is knowing that you gain customer satisfaction, gratitude and a good reputation.
What’s the most difficult part?
The most difficult part was first starting up. The need to find work to pay bills, get your name out there and gain trust.
Any plans to expand in the future?
No immediate plans, I’m currently very happy as a sole trader.
Any advice to young people looking to start on their own?
Choose a trade carefully, you have to love what you do otherwise you wouldn’t give 100%. work your hardest, have respect and a good work ethic, reputation is key.
What’s your favourite thing about Torquay?
Torquay has been my home since 2000. I love living by the sea, There’s so much to do in and around surrounding areas with many fishing lakes too which is always a bonus.
Thanks Barry for taking the time to answer our questions, and a massive congratulations on what you’ve achieved so far!
