After a few weeks off, welcome back to our favourite website feature. Every week, we are going to be choosing a man and woman in the area who have been doing amazing thing in local business.
The first business man of the week this year, and decade, is Kris Hanson.
“At The Plot we cater all sorts of events from weddings and corporate events to private dinner parties and canapé receptions. We look for great local growers and suppliers to buy from if we haven’t grown it ourselves.”
As well as running his business, Kris is also a prominent member of our network and he does his best to help all of our other members. Not only that, but he dedicates a lot of time and effort towards the Crowns Night Shelter in Newton Abbot.
I recently interviewed Kris about his business. Here’s what he had to say…
How did you end up starting your business?
After I moved here from Wales, I started The Plot almost 2 years ago for a few reasons.
I had a little boy and wanted to actually enjoy my life and see him grow up rather than spending 60+ hours a week working for faceless restaurant companies.
I wanted to cook the food I liked and spend more time outside growing it myself.
I wanted a platform that i could use to shout about climate change, community issues and homelessness and that it might give me the opportunity to make a difference.
What’s the best part of running your business?
I love getting to explore Devon – most of the places I cater are insane properties in awesome areas.
Devon is such a beautiful place to be and a lot of the people I’ve met along the way have been amazing.
What is the most challenging part?
The most difficult part of the journey so far was having a little baby and trying to juggle events around a full time job.
It definitely gave me some great time management skills though and now I don’t have the full time job as well i feel like I’m on holiday most of the time 😎
Are you looking to expand in the future?
I’d love to expand the business into different sectors one day – food production and a cookery and gardening school are top of the list at the moment.
Any advice to young people looking to go into business?
If there’s any young people out there looking to start a business my advice would be to keep asking questions and if you believe in yourself and your idea don’t give up. Not everyone will want to help you but plenty will and they’re the people to learn from!
Finally, what’s your favourite thing about Torbay?
The best part of living in Torbay for me is seeing all the different groups of people that are trying to help others and making a real positive change to their lives and the communities they’re a part of!
Thanks a lot Kris for taking the time to answer our questions, and congratulations for all the success you’ve achieved so far!
